Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the Ontario Chicken Innovation and Growth Program?

This is a first-of-its-kind program in the chicken industry that will make a significant supply of chicken available in 2019 to accelerate innovation, putting new chicken products on the plates of Canadian consumers.

In doing so, Chicken Farmers of Ontario is helping to meet consumer demand for new food products.

  1. Who is eligible?

Any company involved in the processing, marketing and sale of chicken products is encouraged to submit an application including primary and further processors as well as retailers, foodservice and restaurant companies working in collaboration with a primary processor as a co-applicant.

For example, in 2018, Grand River Foods and Maple Lodge Farms collaborated to create a first-of-its-kind frozen, smoked chicken product for a leading national food retailer.

  1. How and when do I apply?

The application period is now closed.

  1. Why must a processor be one of the applicants?

We know this industry is full of innovators – processors, further processors, foodservice companies, restauranteurs and retailers – the Program operates by directing additional supply of live birds –millions of kilograms in 2019 – to enable the innovation. As allocation is only made to primary processors, all applications must have a processing partner.

  1. What types of innovations/products are you looking for?

This Program is all about accelerating the development of new, innovative consumer chicken products. Therefore, we’re looking for products that have some track record – piloted or introduced to the market in the last 18 months for which you have at least six months of sales data.

In addition, the product must be the first-of-its-kind in Canada and use chicken grown and fully processed in Ontario.

  1. How will applicants be selected?

This is an independently managed program – applicants are evaluated by the Advisory Committee which considers the following factors:

  • Historical sales data – 60 points
  • Projected sales data – 15 points
  • Quality of the idea – 15 points
  • Economic value – 10 points

Applications must score at least 45 of 60 points in the historical sales data category and at least 70 points overall to be recommended for the Award.

Applications are scored on their own merits so multiple innovations may be recognized in 2019.

  1. How much additional allocation can an innovation receive?

Millions of kilograms are available in 2019. Include the volume required to enable their innovation in your application so the Advisory Committee can consider this information. Since each application is scored on its own merits, it is possible for multiple innovations to be recognized each year and the allocation made available will depend on the details provided by the applicants.

  1. What is the role of Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) in this Program?

This Program is result of collaboration between CFO, processors and the Ontario government. CFO is responsible for setting the Program policy, reviewing the recommendations of the Advisory Committee, Program promotion and marketing to encourage applications and announce winners and the allocation of supply based on the Advisory Committee’s recommendations.

  1. When will the winning successful applicants be announced?

Successful applicants will be announced in early 2020.

Chicken continues to be the choice protein for consumers across Canada. In fact, while per capita meat consumption is decreasing nationally, chicken consumption continues to rise.

In addition, the way Canadians shop for and where they eat continues to evolve. For example, recent survey found that micro-trips in-store – visiting the grocery store throughout the week rather than saving up for one big shop —  is the “new norm” for Canadian consumers. And, of course, there is the impact of food-savvy Millennials has changed foodservice – a trend that will no doubt continue as this demographic enters parenthood.

Savvy processors, retailers, restaurant and foodservice operators will find ways to take advantage of these trends. One way to do so is through product innovation.

Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) wants to help. For the second year in a row, CFO is making millions of kilograms of chicken available to companies with innovative consumer chicken products.

If you’ve got a consumer facing, first-of-its-kind in Canada product made with chicken grown and fully processed in Ontario that has some track record (piloted or introduced in the last 18 months with at least six months of sales data), all you have to do to be considered is apply.

The program is open to further processors, primary processors, food retailers, restaurants and foodservice operators.* And, there is an opportunity for multiple innovations to share in the millions of kilograms as applications are assessed on their own merits.

Chicken Farmers of Ontario Recognizes Consumer Chicken Product Innovation

Grand River Foods and Maple Lodge Farms First Recipient of Ontario Chicken Innovation Award

BURLINGTON, ON – March 8, 2019 – Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) is pleased to announce the first recipient of the Ontario Chicken Innovation Award, co-applicants Grand River Foods and Maple Lodge Farms, who are collaborating to produce frozen, smoked chicken products using a proprietary process that is the first-of-its-kind in North America.

“Congratulations to Grand River Foods and Maple Lodge Farms on being the inaugural recipients,” said R. Douglas Cunningham, Chair of the Independent Advisory Committee that oversees CFO’s Ontario Chicken Innovation and Growth Program and was responsible for assessing applicants. “Their commitment to innovation is sure to put new chicken products on the plates of Canadian consumers for years to come.”

Created in 2018 by Chicken Farmers of Ontario, the Program is the first-of-its-kind in the chicken industry. It is open to primary processors, further processors, retailers, foodservice and restaurant companies involved in the processing, marketing and sale of chicken products. Companies that are not primary processors must include a primary processor as part of their application. Innovations must use chicken grown and fully processed in Ontario.

In assessing applicants, the Independent Advisory Committee considered four factors: historic sales, projected future sales, the quality of the idea and economic value. An additional supply of live birds is directed to the successful applicant’s primary processor to enable the innovation.

“This new, inline cooking approach allows chicken to be infused with a blend of smoke from untreated hardwoods through the cooking process and quickly frozen to lock in the flavours,” said Don Kilimnik, Director of Co-Packing Sales and Special Projects, Grand River Foods. “We’re thrilled to be able to further grow this product line with the additional supply of chicken.”

“Our companies collaborate on many products and we are excited to be recognized,” said Fred Marques, Chief Operating Officer, Maple Lodge Farms. “Chicken is already Canada’s favourite protein and we are confident that introducing new products like this will strengthen that position.”

With the first year of the Ontario Chicken Innovation and Growth Program complete, the Independent Advisory Committee is reviewing the Program and will open the next round of applications in the coming months.

“We look forward to continuing to accelerate innovation in our industry and encourage all those involved in the processing, marketing and sale of chicken to consider applying,” said Ed Benjamins, Chair of Chicken Farmers of Ontario.

“By rewarding innovation, we can do more to put innovative chicken products on the plates of Canadian consumers and enhance economic activity in Ontario,” added Rob Dougans, President and CEO, Chicken Farmers of Ontario. “We look forward to seeing more successful applicants in the future.”

New, first of its kind program will recognize top consumer-facing innovations in the chicken industry

Applications now available for the Ontario Chicken Innovation and Growth Program

BURLINGTON, ONTARIO (April 4, 2018) – Recognizing that Canadians are eating more chicken than ever before and continue to look for new, innovative products to meet their needs, Chicken Farmers of Ontario (CFO) today launched the Ontario Chicken Innovation and Growth Program to accelerate consumer-facing product innovation and stimulate growth in the Ontario chicken industry.

“This program is the first of its kind in our industry. Our goal is simple: put new, innovative Ontario chicken products on the plates of consumers and enhance economic activity in Ontario,” said Rob Dougans, President and CEO, Chicken Farmers of Ontario. “We are excited to see new innovations come to market through this Program and to see our industry – farmers, processors, retailers, restaurant and foodservice operators working together – continue their long history of collaboration to grow the market for chicken products.”

Chicken has been the first choice of Canadians at home and in restaurants for more than a decade and during that time the industry has adapted, addressing the growing need for locally grown food, convenient meal options and greater interest in healthy eating. Through this Program, top consumer-facing innovations will be recognized and an additional supply of chicken will be allocated to enable the innovation and accelerate growth.

“Ontario is home to the largest chicken farming, processor and consumer base in Canada making it an excellent place to bring new products to the market,” said Michael Burrows, Chair, Association of Ontario Chicken Processors. “This program is an excellent opportunity for all of us to look at innovations in development and accelerate their market entry.”

All companies involved in the processing, marketing and sale of chicken products including primary processors, further processors, retailers, foodservice and restaurant companies are encouraged to apply at www.chickeninnovation.ca. Applicants that are not primary processors must include a primary processor as part of their application to enable the allocation. Innovations must be designed for consumers, be the first of their kind in Canada and use chicken grown and fully processed in Ontario.

Eligible applications will be reviewed by an Independent Advisory Committee of experts who are also responsible for overseeing the program. The Committee is chaired by the Honourable Douglas Cunningham, a former judge of the Superior Court of Ontario, and includes three experts in consumer packaged goods, business, marketing and the chicken industry: Paul Borg, Steve Dowbiggin and Mary Beth Williamson.

“This program is all about accelerating innovative products that meet consumer needs. Therefore, we’re looking for products that have some track record – piloted or introduced to the market in the last 18 months so that historical sales data can be part of the application,” said Mr. Cunningham. “And, because applications are scored on their own merits, there is the opportunity for multiple innovations to be recognized.”

In addition to at least six months of historical sales data, each application must include a description of the innovation, forecasted sales data, market research and a marketing plan. The Advisory Committee will assess each application and recommend the highest scoring applicants to CFO for final approval.

Applications are now available online at www.chickeninnovation.ca, where interested companies can also find out more about the program. The application deadline is July 13, 2018.
